“When a man is in despair, it means he still believes in something.” Dmitri Shostakovich
THE MIRROR WITH THREE FACES was taken from the title of the second Piano Trio by Lera Auerbach to become the central story element for our visual production. Another visual key element was the juxtaposition of abandoned industrial ruins and the polished classiness of concert attire and a concert hall. While this could have been clichéd in other circumstances, the music of Dmitri Shostakovich and Lera Auerbach tied all of it coherently together.
The visual story being told is one of separation, searching, desperation, and ultimately reunion, as can be heard also in the music presented on this album. Whereas in Shostakovich the bleakness still dominates, Auerbach’s music, though heavily influenced by Shostakovich, reconciles his heritage with a more playful character. Both of these elements are reflected in our visual concept for this enormously rewarding project.
